The Christian-Albrechts-Universitaet zu Kiel (CAU) and The Ecology Centre of CAU has conducted several interdisciplinary projects in the past 10 years. In these projects about 100 PhD theses have been completed, most of them with an interdisciplinary supervision. Of special importance in respect to ECOHYD are the activities of the involved CAU teachers in the use of landscape sciences for environmental assessments. Comprehensive knowledge and experience in the application of systems analytical methods, case study performance and in interdisciplinary co-operation are available at the Ecology Centre. Moreover, environmental, geographical and statistical data which can be analyzed using geographical information systems or simulation models and technical support are provided by the institution. The Ecology Centre aims at research and development of integrative approaches to fundamental ecological sciences and theories and applied environmental research. The institute is made up of the divisions: Ecosystem research Coastal Ecology, Landscape Ecology, Hydrology and Water Management, Geo-botany, Ecotechnology and Ecosystem Development. Currently, about 65 scientific employees who are supported by a technical staff of 20 people are working at the Ecology Centre. Close co-operation with other institutions, enterprises and authorities are part of the scientific concept. The Ecology Centre is essentially contributing to the activities of CAU to internationalize its training activities. Dr. Windhorst coordinates the CAU part of the ERMASMUS MUNDUS programme “EMAE-European Master in Applied Ecology” and the International Master programme “Environmental Management”. The Department of Hydrology and Water Resources Management has long standing cooperation agreements for research and education with the Chinese Academy of Science (Institute of Hydrobiology, Wuhan; NIGLAS Nanjing) and with the IIT Madras, Chennai India. Additionally it is closely connected to the UNESCO activities in the area of Ecohydrology and IWARM |
